We recently added our new range of grey painted kitchens to our kitchen showroom in Carlow. It’s a colour we found by chance when making some colour samples for clients and is a huge success. Everyone that calls to our showroom seems to be drawn to the kitchen. While cream or ivory painted kitchens are still popular, people want a change and a kitchen that’s slightly different to their friends or family.

Grey Painted Kitchen

It’s difficult to find a grey that is both bright and has a warm feel to it but we feel we’ve found it with this colour. What I would say is that it’s always important to have some test colours made by the company you are using to make your new kitchen. Sample should be of a generous size, say 600 mm * 600 mm and they should always be viewed in the room the kitchen is being fitted in. I say this because lighting plays a big part in how the colour looks in a room and every room is different. Take a colour like Farrow and Ball “Elephants Breath”, this paint can look completely different in various room lighting. When put in a room with limited light and artificial lighting it can have a pink hue to it which can be a disaster and ruin the whole look to your kitchen.

A Grey Painted Kitchen from our “Elijah” range.

There’s a good selection of worktop colours to choose from with a grey painted kitchen. I personally am a big fan of Silestone by Consentino. Bianco Rivers, Lyra, Yukon and Lagoon are all colours we’ve used here at Woodale Designs. While these colours are light in texture and colour they are easy to keep clean, stain resistant (Everything stains but stains are easy to remove) and blend well with a grey paint colour.

Mirror Splashbacks

Some features we think look great with this style kitchen are mirrors for splashbacks and instead of wall tiles we try to add wall panelling in the colour of the kitchen or in a wood that compliments the paint. It can be difficult to find a wall tile to suit most kitchen colours nowadays and wall panelling looks great and is easy to keep clean.

Glass Kitchen Dresser and built in American Fridge

I was on Twitter today, yes Twitter, I’m a nerd at heart! I saw David Quaid show his followers a video of a 3D printer which is capable of building a house in 20 hours! This is just amazing, that a printer, a machine, can build the structure of a home in that amount of time with less C02 emmission that a home built with timber or concrete.
There are a few questions that someone who works within the construction industry would ask though. How do they seal the house and make it water resistant and seal it to all the natural elements? I wonder how or if this house can be plastered or rendered in some way.
Have a look at this amazing video and for those of you who can’t understand why someone would use Twitter, don’t knock it until you try it, you would be amazed at what you can learn by following the right people!

A comprehensive list of the various phrases kitchen designers use when describing key components and features within the kitchen.

Cad stands for computer aided design and your kitchen designer should give you a cad drawing in 3d or virtual reality of your new kitchen.

Fully Integrated is the term used for kitchen appliances that a hidden behind kitchen doors in order to give the cabinetry a more streamline look.

Splashbacks is a material that is placed behind the cooking and and sink area of a kitchen. It can be part of the kitchen worktops or in stainless steel or tiled effect.

Upstands are quiet similar to splash backs and are the strip about 100 mm in height and of the same material to the kitchen countertops which run along the back edge in order to protect the walls.

Plinth, kickboard, kickplate is the wood, usually similar to the kitchen colour that run along the bottom of the kitchens base units to hide the leg supports.

Carcass is the actual structure of the kitchen and the cabinets where items are stored. These come in a wide range of finishes, colours and wood varieties.

Built-in appliances the are built into the kitchen units and usually consist of ovens, microwaves, coffee machines and warming drawers.

Built-under is the term used for appliances that go below worktop height such as dishwashers and certain style ovens.

Flatpack is not a word that we like to use but it refers to the furniture having to be assembled by the person and will come in component form for the customer to assemble. Mass produced kitchens are supplied this way.

Cut outs are the areas of the kitchen where the hob and sink will be cut into the worktop surfaces. The kitchen supplier will carry out this unless specialist countertops are being fitted.

Bespoke refers to the kitchen being handmade specifically for the clients home and has no association with mass production. Lots of kitchen companies use this term while only a handful practice it in Ireland.

Inframe kitchen doors are where the door sits flush with a wood surround that is fitted to the kitchen carcass. While some companies use a butt hinge to hang the kitchen door from this frame it is also possible to mount a soft close spring loaded which will give the same inframe look without the appearance of the butt hinge.

We have seen quiet a few articles on this topic recently. While the various articles blast either painted or hand painted kitchens we feel that both have their pros and cons. There’s no doubt that painted kitchens are here to stay and are by far a favourite among home owners. Lets narrow it down to each way a kitchen is painted and why kitchen suppliers choose one over the other.

Hand Painted Kitchens – Benefits to the Supplier.

Easy to prepare the kitchen. The kitchen only need to be primed in a colour similar to the finish colour.

Easy to install. Cornice joints can be easily filled and painted. ( This can be easily done with spray painted also)

The client gets to decide on a colour at a later stage if needs be.

Some suppliers buy there doors from manufactures which are prone to cracking on the tenon rail. Hand painting is flexible and can hide this.

Easier to fit inframe doors.

A lot of companies find it difficult to get a perfect spray finish so opt for hand painting.

The responsibility of a flawless finish is that of the hand painter and not the kitchen company.

Easier to transport, less chance of damage with the kitchen being finished in place.

Spray painted Kitchen – Benefit to the client.

Steam resistant from kettles and cooking area when a high quality paint is used.

Easy to clean with just the wipe of a cloth.

Flawless finish when painted correctly – No brush marks from hand painting.

No mess in your home. One the kitchen is fitted and finished that it with no waiting around for painters to finish.

Like hand painted kitchens, spray painted is easy to touch up regardless of what others say the paint does mould and bond to the previous finish.

A spray painted kitchen keeps it colours and tones far longer that a hand painted finish.

Less prone to finger prints and stains.

More affordable to the client.

There are issues with both paint finishes and whether or not a kitchen is spray painted or hand painted they will chip but both can be repaired quiet easily. All kitchen finishes chip and can be damages it just so happens that you can notice it more easily on account of the paint colour. With an oak kitchen is it less noticeable because the tones between the wood and the varnished finish are so similar which basically means it’s invisible to the eye.

It is easy to give a spray painted kitchen more character by using oak or ash as you wood rather than poplar – Poplar has little or no grain. Using either wood you get a more traditional look adding character to the kitchen. Good luck deciding on which finish you want for your new kitchen.

I spend a good bit of my time in the evenings browsing on-line and saving images as I go that I like the look of. I have always had an interest in stairs and how they are made some of which I am amazed by to be honest. Most people look at an item of furniture and decide whether or not they like it, while I do the same I immediately work out how it is made and the best way to make it. I have spent hours trying to figure out how things are made especially with regards stairs, really elaborate stairs that I see from time to time.

I take the same approach when it comes to kitchens here at Woodale Designs. Years ago as a teenager I would look at what I thought were really beautiful kitchens and that I would never be able to make but by watching people I admired in the industry I learned that it was pretty easy and by continuing to do this I think it helps us in both our design and manufacture.

Here are a few stairs I’ve seen. Some are a bit on the crazy side, other with unique storage and then just beautiful stairs.

A stair for the kid to play on!

One of the biggest problems a kitchen company runs into is the location of sockets and water supplies. If you are building a new home it is vital that your kitchen designer give you the location of power points so that on the day of fitting you don’t find one of your power points is in the way of a unit. If you are having a kitchen fitted in your existing home then you may need an electrician to move your sockets in order for your sockets and light switches to be in the correct position. There is no point in trying to design your new dream kitchen around them, this doesn’t work and defeats the purpose of have a new kitchen designed.

How many of you are renting a house, paying €600 – €1,000 per month or sharing a house with others and paying your landlord €300 per room? I’d say quiet a few! I bet the majority of you are telling yourselves and others that you’re waiting for house prices to drop – That you see in the news that prices are set to drop even more over the next year. So off you go and pay another €9,000 (€750 pm)in rent for the next year while you wait and see what happens. Doesn’t make as much sense now does it? You may be lucky and see a large drop in a property you like or you’ve just handed out another 9k.
Everyone seems to think that’s acceptable to throw money down the drain year in and year out on cars but when it comes to buying a home for your family it’s just wrong! A home, a building that is yours to decorate, to add your own personal touch to. We all go out and spend money on cars that depreciate up to 3k as soon as it leaves the showroom and can loose way more over a year depending on the value of the car. It just doesn’t make sense to me when I look at it like this. Why not take the plunge, go out and buy the house you want and can afford? So what if it looses money, the large drops have happened so there isn’t going to be any huge savings if you’re renting. There is no better feeling than to come home to your new home. I have always felt strongly about this in both personal and business. I have rented, it sickened me and I promised myself never again. I rented an industrial unit for the first 5 years of business giving my then landlord 80k in rent. Regardless of what I’ve lost in value on business properties since then that 80k would have paid a sizeable amount off my loans.
While some people have no other choice than to rent there are plenty out there too scared to take that leap. I say do it, forget about how much it may drop and think about everything you gain while you immediately stop lining your landlords pockets. Calculate how much you have spent and lost on cars in the last 5 years which you somehow find acceptable and then ask yourself why is buying a home any different.

It’s getting more and more difficult to get a kitchen designed for free. With everyone pricing around for the best quote companies just won’t allow their designs to leave the showroom any more. Time is money and kitchen companies can’t afford to pay people for designs on kitchens they are not selling. Some of us allow the designs to be viewed in their showroom with the option of taking the plans home for a fee of €100 which is refundable on the sale of a kitchen.

There’s the other argument. How can prices be compared properly if the potential client is going from showroom to showroom getting quotes on A kitchen. Not every design is the same. One designer may have more drawer pack, doors and a more elaborate design to the previous. This leaves it impossible to compare prices. In order to compare like with like you need a design and also choose a style / finish.

This Free Kitchen design software allows you to create a room and add your own tastes through a system called drag and drop. You basically click on the unit and slide it into position. It’s pretty simple to use and will allow you to get kitchen prices online or by visiting showrooms.

Whether you live in a three bed semi, a farm house or a self build painted kitchens are by far the most popular kitchen out there. Most people have made there mind up before they even reach our showroom. They have done their research online and more than likely have a magazine under their arm with all the different pages folded where they have found interesting ideas or features.Farrow and Ball is one of the first colours mentioned when discussing a painted kitchen. Over the years people wanted a “cream kitchen” but as kitchens evolve and the client get bored of the norm companies come up with new colours new names and focus on giving something that’s different to what others are doing. Farrow and Ball have done just that. It’s no longer called Cream it’s called Old White, a shade of green is now called Bone or if you want a shade of green with a hint of grey you have Stoney Ground! That’s where the following kitchen came from. The client wanted a grey painted kitchen but wanted something slightly warmer in appearance. Have looked through the relevant colour charts Stoney Ground was decided on.

Stoney Ground Farrow and Ball

The colour of this kitchen was decided on quickly then came the decision on the island – Painted or a wood finish. Walnut seemed to be a simple choice. We went with walnut in the island and then decided that the kitchen needed some injection of wood to carry the theme throughout. We added walnut sheeted backs to to the dresser area and pull out walnut spice racks either side of the hob area.

This kitchen will be featured in Irish Kitchens magazine on January 27th. It’s a design we are pretty proud of and wanted to share.

While I can’t see this product being used in Kitchens at this time, I think it is an excellent idea for a restaurant, boardroom or airport. Gorenje also mentioned that this cylinder shaped refridgerator can be purchased without the table so maybe we will see it in some exciting design features in the future…
